Over the summer months, I formed part of a study group (at church) that focused on “The Daniel Plan”. It made me think about the manner in which I cared for my body and learned that everything we eat affects our mood, mind and body, eventually affecting our every-day-life and the ability to serve our Lord. One of the scriptures that caught my attention is found in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” In my mind, this scripture referred to being sexually pure. It never dawned on me that in order to serve Him, we should also watch what we eat.
Why should we care for our bodies? 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior the Holy Spirit takes residence in our body (Temple), we no longer belong to ourselves, we belong to God.We should seek to honor God in everything, including our bodies; “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all of the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
As I meditated on these scriptures, it all became clear to me. I should honor God by eating well. I need to be healthy physically, in mind and spirit to be able to serve Him, my family, and partake in daily activities. How will I have the energy to serve the Lord if I am feeling sluggish, stressed and spiritually weak? How can I ask my family to eat healthier, if I don’t?
